The Pennsylvania Department of Aging Office of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman is pleased to announce an exciting new project called PEER. The PEER Project Pennsylvania’s Empowered Expert Residents has been an exciting evolution for all of us. Initiated in the Spring of 2002, a group of three pioneering nursing home residents in Cambria County were interested in training to upgrade their skills in self-advocacy.
A series of five training sessions were conducted and the first PEER graduates were on board! The project then moved to Schuylkill where a group of fourteen residents were already meeting on a quarterly basis, and the training was conducted for those fourteen PEER graduates. The program has grown to approximately 375 graduates at present and the plan is for further expansion in 2007-2008. The PEER Project is now found in 40 Long term living facilities throughout Pennsylvania. The PEER Project encompasses all levels of care from Independent Living to Nursing Facility Care.
